The Volunteer Group Bonus Program (VGB) is designed to support our local non-profits by providing unique and fun volunteer opportunities throughout race weekend. As a thank you to your organization the Houston Marathon Committee will make a donation based on how many volunteers provided and complete their shift(s).

VGB Requirements:

Must be a 501(c)(3) organization and provide proof of status to the Houston Marathon Committee
All members of the group must be registered for the same volunteer position to receive credit

The minimum number of volunteers that must complete their shifts is 20. The donation structure is as follows:

  • 20 – 29 Volunteers = $300
  • 30 – 39 Volunteers = $350
  • 40 – 49 Volunteers = $400
  • 50 – 59 Volunteers = $450
  • 60 + Volunteers = $500

Group Volunteer Opportunities
GEAR CHECK
Before the race, runners will drop off their gear bags at Gear Check. Volunteers will sort the bags numerically and place them onto shelves. When a runner returns to claim their items, Race Crew will retrieve their bags. Note this position is for the Sunday only (full & half marathon).

EXPO
Groups can assist us in the EXPO on Friday or Saturday on Race Weekend providing support for our packet pick-up area or participant item handout!

RUNNER MERCHANDISE
A finisher's favorite stop! This position consists of assisting in the Finisher Merchandise area passing out finisher shirts.

H-E-B FOOD COURT
After completing the race, participants will refuel with food and fluids at the HEB Food Court. They will be served breakfast, ice cream sandwiches and a variety of drink options. Race Crew will assist in serving food and busing tables.

SECTOR COURSE MARSHAL
Get a front row seat to watch the race! Sector Course Marshal Volunteers help runners by cheering them on and keeping them safe.

START LINE
Be part of the Start Line excitement! Start Line Race Crew get first-hand experience of how the race begins. Opportunities include:
Directing runners to their correct corral assignments, Ensuring runners are admitted to the correct corral, Assisting runners in moving up to their respective Start Line

REFUELING STATIONS
Set-up and distribute Gatorade and water on the half marathon and marathon course. Clean up after the last runner passes.

5K TEAM
Assist with our Saturday morning 5K! Volunteers can with 5K medals, packet pick-up, 5K food and more.

Waiver

HOUSTON MARATHON COMMITTEE, INC. VOLUNTEER WAIVER

Participation, Release of Liability, and Indemnification. In consideration of completing the event volunteer registration form, you, the applicant, have submitted this form, intending to be legally bound for yourself, your heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, (a) hereby waive and release any and all rights, claims and causes of action you have or may have against any Race Organizer (as defined below) that may arise as a result of your participation in the event; and (b) hereby indemnify, defend, and hold harmless any and all Race Organizers from and against any and all injuries, losses, causes of action, liabilities, damages, expenses (including but not limited to, attorney’s fees and court costs) or claims (collectively, “Claims” and individually, a “Claim”) that you have or may have and might arise directly or indirectly from your participation in the event and/or the condition of the race course, property, facilities or equipment used for the event, even if the Claim is alleged to arise from the negligence or fault of the Race Organizer, and regardless of when such Claim may arise, including, without limitation, Claims relating to (i) theft, loss or disappearance of property, (ii) bodily injury (including fatality), and (iii) property damage. For these purposes, a “Race Organizer” is one or more of the following: Houston Marathon Committee, Inc. (HMC), Houston Marathon Foundation, Inc. (HMF), Chevron USA Inc., Chevron Products Company, Aramco Services Company, H. E. Butt Grocery Company, USA Track and Field, the City of Houston, the City of West University Place, all governmental agencies representing the territories in which the event will be held and from which resources (such as, without limitation, fire, police and ambulance personnel) are provided, USATF and IAAF officials, all medical service providers, all official sponsors, contractors, vendors, and the respective affiliates, subsidiaries, directors, officers, employees, contractors, vendors, agents and volunteers of all of the foregoing, and their respective heirs, executors, administrators, successors and assigns, for any and all injuries or damages, physical or otherwise, suffered by you in this event or at associated events leading up to the race for which you are registering.

Assumption of Risk. You understand that by volunteering for the event there are potential risks and dangers, both from known risks and unanticipated risks. You participate willingly, voluntarily and in reliance upon your own judgment and ability, and thereby assume all risk of loss, damage or injury (including death) from any cause whatsoever and whether or not caused by the negligence of others.
You understand that by volunteering for this event, you have no expectations of payment (monetary or other) and understand that you are not an employee of the HMC or HMF, both of which are non-profit organizations, and that you do not qualify for employee benefits of any kind.

Consent to Medical Treatment. If you become ill or injured while volunteering for the event, you give permission for a representative of the Houston Marathon Committee, Inc. to take whatever steps are reasonably necessary to render emergency first aid to you. You also consent to such emergency medical treatment as may be reasonably necessary to ensure your health and welfare including, but not limited to, life saving measures and treatment, hospital care and administration of drugs or medicine under the care of a licensed physician and/or surgeon.

Race Rules. You agree to abide by all rules governing the event and the instructions given to you by race officials and Houston Marathon Committee race crew captains.

Publicity and Photo Release. You hereby grant the Houston Marathon Committee and its licensees the perpetual worldwide right to promote your participation in the Houston Marathon events, as well as future and past Houston Marathon events. Such promotion right shall include, and is not limited to, use of your name, portrait, likeness, voice and any statements made by you regarding your participation in the Houston Marathon events. The rights granted in this paragraph shall include the right to photograph and videotape your participation in the Houston Marathon events. You acknowledge that you shall not receive any compensation for the use of such images, video, likeness, etc.

Miscellaneous. You swear or affirm that you have never been convicted of a sexual offense. You understand that you are NOT eligible to volunteer if you cannot truthfully confirm the forgoing statement.
